The Small Things That Make You the First Person We Call for Logistics Work
- Date
- August 18, 2025
It’s 8:47am, and a client calls our Tilbury office with a last-minute request.
They need someone on site in three hours and now the clock is ticking for us.
Out of hundreds of people we could call, only a few names instantly come to mind and that is not by accident.
Being first on the call list is not always about having the most experience or the rarest qualifications. Obviously these things will matter, however it is often about the simple, consistent habits that make us confident you will deliver.
Firstly let’s start with the reality of logistics recruitment…
The logistics industry moves fast. HGV driving and warehousing roles appear and disappear in hours, schedules can change unexpectedly as clients call with urgent requests and we have to act quickly.
When things get this busy, it is natural for smaller behaviours to slip. You might miss a call, arrive a little late, or keep your head down rather than check in with us. And we are not here to point fingers, but we do want to share a truth we see every day. The candidates who consistently get the best jobs, the quickest offers, and the most repeat work are not just skilled.
They are the people who make it easy for us and the client to trust them.
Here are the habits that put you top of the list.
1. Answer the call
When a client calls with a last-minute request, the first people we contact are the ones we know will actually pick up the phone. Shocking, we know…
You might not always be able to take the job, but simply being reachable means you will hear about new opportunities before they are filled.
2. Be on time
Arriving when you say you will is one of the easiest ways to build trust. It shows both us and the client that you can be relied upon to start the job properly, without creating stress for the rest of the team.
3. Stay presentable
Even in high-vis and safety boots, presentation matters. Clean, well-maintained workwear and a professional attitude set the tone for how others see you, and they reflect well on you and on us.
4. Stay flexible
As we said earlier, in logistics, things change quickly. Being willing to adapt, whether it is starting a little earlier, working slightly later, or stepping into a different role for the day, makes you someone we know we can count on in a pinch.
5. Go the extra mile
Helping out when it is needed, such as covering a shift at short notice or staying until the job is finished, makes a lasting impression. We’re not suggesting you consistently rearrange your plans, but that extra effort every so often is remembered long after the job ends.
Ultimately this will lead to more work in the future.
6. Keep communication open in tricky situations
Not every shift will be perfect.
If a problem comes up, maybe you made a mistake, maybe the client did. Whether it is about the role, the hours, or the work environment, keeping an open, friendly dialogue with us and the client is the best way to get it resolved quickly.
Our aim is to ensure every role you take to be a good one, and honest, constructive communication helps us make that happen.
Why does this work in your favour?
These habits are not about doing us a favour, they are about building your own professional reputation.
When you are responsive, reliable, and engaged, you get more opportunities, often the better shifts, more hours, and higher-quality roles. Clients remember you for the right reasons, and we can recommend you with complete confidence.
It is a win for you, a win for the client, and yes, a win for us too.
The “first call” moment.
Back to that moment when a new, exciting role comes in.
We do not scroll through every name. We go straight to the people we know will answer, turn up, and get stuck in without drama.
This goes for both our HGV Driving and Industrial desks. We know it’s not about luck, it is about the trust you have built, job after job, through those small, simple choices.
So here our final thoughts…
None of this takes years of training or another qualification.
It is about habits, the kind that take seconds to do but can make all the difference when the phone rings.
And when it does, we want it to be your number we are calling first.
